Secure Access to Geo-Restricted Content via Residential Routing
Table of Contents

Have you ever tried to access a certain website only to be hit with the message, “This content is not available in your country?” Or, probably, you are trying to watch your favorite show but can not seem to find it anywhere. Such geo-restrictions and content blocking can be so annoying and damper your online experience. Let’s have a look at how you can bypass them and enjoy a more seamless browsing experience.

Geo-restrictions comprise a set of technologies used to restrict access based on geographical location. Also known as geo-blocking, these technologies prohibit users from accessing or seeing different content based on where they are located on the global map. It usually happens when a virtual server receives a request from an IP address located in a blocked country.

You will identify geo-restrictions when you see the message “this content is not available in your country,” or cannot find certain content or advertisements, and search results look different for different country settings. For instance, Netflix’s library varies across regions, with some videos available in the US and not in Canada or Australia. Similarly, BBC iPlayer is strictly available in the UK and inaccessible to anyone outside the country. If you are a frequent traveler or enjoy international content, such restrictions can be limiting.

The main reason for geo-blocking is usually practical, although other times it could be malicious and self-serving. More often than not, websites and other online services impose consider geo-restrictions for the following reasons:

  • Geo-marketing and Brand Management: A brand may want to show different messaging, prices, advertising companies, and product ranges across customers in different locations.
  • Values and Regulations: A brand can block access to pages that include products or activities deemed illegal in that country.
  • Market Segmentation: Geo-restriction is a common mechanism among global retail, tourism, and media companies that want to apply market-specific terms of service and prices.
  • Resources and Security: Smaller websites serving only local customers can block remote visitors as a way of avoiding traffic load from them.
  • Regional Licensing and Copyright: Companies operating streaming media and services such as gaming, sports, books, entertainment, and gambling implement region-specific policies.
  • Censorship and Propaganda: Geo-restricting, unfortunately, often becomes a tool for the enforcement of propaganda and other forms of public sentiment manipulation.
  • Suppressing Competition of Government Websites: In some countries, the government enforces the use of compliant or censored alternatives to search engines, messaging apps, or social media outlets by blocking all foreign competitors.

The obvious way to bypass geo-blocking would be to go to the location where the page or service is available. However, this is not always possible or logical. The easiest way, though, is to appear on the website’s location services as if you are already there.

A residential proxy allows you to do this by masking or hiding your actual IP address. Acting as an intermediary between you, the user, and the website server, proxies allow you to overcome the geo-blocking hurdle. When using the proxy, the server will only see the IP address of the proxy and treat it as a request from the proxy’s stated country.

While there are several types of proxies, residential proxies are efficient for individuals and businesses looking for secure, anonymous, and unrestricted access to online content. The unique feature of this type of proxy is that they route traffic through real residential IP addresses, which makes them harder to detect compared to datacenter proxies. Search engines, streaming services, and e-commerce sites usually block datacenter proxies because of their non-residential nature. In contrast, a residential proxy mimics real users, enabling them to access geo-blocked content without detection. The higher reliability and success rates make residential proxies more useful for critical online activities.

By offering secure and unrestricted access to online services, residential proxies allow users to access geo-locked content on platforms like Hulu, Netflix, and BBC iPlayer. By assigning your device a unique residential IP address, a residential proxy helps avoid ISP throttling, especially when streaming high bandwidth.

For businesses, residential proxies can be an essential tool for testing streaming processes across different countries to ensure optimal performance and availability.  Businesses can test their digital content and provide users across various regions with have content experience. Other uses include testing local ads, analyzing search rankings, and tracking pricing.

Some websites and online services use geo-blocking for various reasons, ranging from market segmentation to brand management. While these reasons are pragmatic most of the time, you may need to bypass the barrier for personal or business reasons. With residential proxies, you can bypass geo-restrictions by masking your true IP address to appear as if you are browsing from a region or country where the service is available.
