Upload one square image and this tool produces it at 16, 32, 48, 64, 128, 180, 192 and 512 pixels - the sizes browsers, mobile home screens and search results actually request. It is for shipping a complete icon set in one pass instead of exporting sizes by hand.

Different surfaces ask for different files. A browser tab wants 16 or 32. An iOS home screen shortcut uses the 180 pixel apple-touch-icon. Android home screens and PWA manifests use 192 and 512. Google's search results require an icon that is a multiple of 48 pixels square, which is what the 48 and 192 files cover. Ship one size and some of these fall back to a stretched or blank icon.

With the files in place, reference them from the head:

<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="32x32" href="/favicon-32x32.png">
<link rel="icon" type="image/png" sizes="192x192" href="/favicon-192x192.png">
<link rel="apple-touch-icon" sizes="180x180" href="/apple-touch-icon.png">

The rel="icon" lines cover browsers and search; apple-touch-icon covers iOS, which ignores the standard icon relation for home screen shortcuts.

Start square and start large - 512 pixels or an SVG. Detail that reads at 512 disappears at 16, so favicons that work tend to be a single letter, a mark, or a simple silhouette rather than a shrunk logo with wordmark. Upscaling a small source will not add detail back.

Google caches favicons aggressively and only updates them when it recrawls the home page, so a change can take days or weeks to appear in results. The icon file also has to be crawlable: if it sits behind a rule that blocks it in robots.txt, Google will not display it regardless of the markup.

Add the surrounding head tags with the meta tag generator, check the social preview image with the Open Graph checker, confirm the home page is indexed with check Google indexing, and review the full head with the meta tags analyzer. More in SEO tools.

Frequently asked questions

What favicon sizes do I actually need?
At minimum 32 pixels for browser tabs, 180 for the iOS apple-touch-icon, and 192 plus 512 for Android and PWA manifests. Google's search results need an icon that is a multiple of 48 pixels square. Generating the full set costs nothing and avoids fallbacks.
Does the favicon have to be an ICO file?
No. Google accepts PNG, ICO, SVG, JPG and GIF. PNG is the practical default for individual sizes because it is well supported and lossless. ICO is only still common because it can hold several sizes in one file, which matters less now that link tags name each size.
Why has my new favicon not changed in Google?
Google caches favicons and refreshes them when it recrawls your home page, not when it recrawls the icon. That can take days or weeks. Confirm the file is reachable and not blocked from crawling, then wait; there is no way to force the refresh.
Can I use a rectangular image?
You should not. Every surface that displays a favicon expects a square, so a rectangular source gets cropped or squashed unpredictably. Start from a square canvas and design the mark to read at 16 pixels, where anything more than a letter or simple shape becomes mud.
