Convert Miligrams to mililiters (mg to ml)

1 milligram = 0.001 milliliters for water (density 1 g/ml). Multiply milligrams by 0.001; other substances need their own density.

How to convert milligrams to milliliters

Step 1

Take the value in milligrams.

1,000 mg

Step 2

Divide by 1,000.

1,000 ÷ 1,000

Step 3

Round to the precision you need.

= 1 ml

Mass and volume only convert through density. This page assumes water; oil, flour or honey give different results.

Table of Contents

A milligram is a unit of mass: one thousandth of a gram. A millilitre is a unit of volume: one thousandth of a litre, the same as a cubic centimetre. You can only move from one to the other through density, which says how much mass fits in a given volume. The converter above assumes water, whose density is 1 gram per millilitre at room temperature for every practical purpose. That gives the familiar result: 1,000 mg of water fills 1 ml, so 1 mg = 0.001 ml.

Milk is slightly denser than water at about 1.03 g/ml, so 1,000 mg of milk takes up a little less than 1 ml. Honey is much denser at roughly 1.42 g/ml, and olive oil is lighter at about 0.92 g/ml, so 1,000 mg of oil fills about 1.09 ml. If you know the density of your liquid, divide the mass in milligrams by the density in mg/ml to get the volume: 500 mg ÷ 1,420 mg/ml ≈ 0.35 ml of honey.

Liquid medicines are labelled with a concentration such as 250 mg/5 ml, which already accounts for what the medicine is dissolved in. To find the volume for a dose, divide the dose by the concentration: a 125 mg dose of a 250 mg/5 ml suspension is 125 ÷ 50 = 2.5 ml. Never convert a medicine dose with the water assumption on this page; the concentration on the label is the only number that applies.

What is a milligram?

A milligram (abbreviated as "mg") is a unit of mass in the metric system, equal to one-thousandth of a gram or 0.001 grams. It is commonly used to measure small quantities such as medicine dosages or nutritional values.

What is a milliliter?

A milliliter (abbreviated as "ml" or "mL") is a unit of volume in the metric system, equal to one-thousandth of a liter or 0.001 liters. It is commonly used to measure liquids in cooking, science, and medicine.

Frequently asked questions

How many ml is 1 mg?
For water, 1 mg = 0.001 ml, because 1,000 milligrams of water occupy one millilitre. For any other substance the answer depends on its density.
Is 1 ml the same as 1,000 mg?
Only for water and liquids with a similar density. One millilitre of water weighs about 1,000 mg; one millilitre of honey weighs about 1,420 mg and one millilitre of olive oil about 920 mg.
How do I convert mg to ml for a medicine?
Divide the dose in mg by the concentration on the label in mg/ml. A 250 mg/5 ml syrup is 50 mg per ml, so a 200 mg dose is 200 ÷ 50 = 4 ml.
What is 500 mg in ml?
500 mg of water is 0.5 ml. For other liquids divide 500 by the density in mg/ml, for example 500 ÷ 1,030 ≈ 0.49 ml for milk.
Why does the mg to ml converter ask about the substance?
Because mass and volume are linked by density, and every substance has its own. Water is the default because its density is 1 g/ml, which makes the numbers simple and matches most everyday questions.
