Paste a title tag and the keyword you are targeting, and this tool reports its character length, whether the keyword is present, where in the string it appears, and a set of specific changes. It is for the moment before a title ships, when you still have a free hand to rewrite it.

A title is read left to right and truncated from the right. Anything after the cut is invisible in the result, so a keyword sitting at the end of a 78-character title may never be seen by the person deciding whether to click. The tool reports the keyword position for exactly this reason.

Take this title:

The Complete and Definitive Guide to Everything You Need to Know About Pyeong Conversion

That is 88 characters, and the only distinctive word - pyeong - sits at character 71. In a result it truncates to "The Complete and Definitive Guide to Everything You Need to Know About..." which tells a searcher nothing. Rewritten:

Pyeong to Square Meters Converter - Korean Apartment Sizes

That is 57 characters, leads with the term people search, and uses the remaining space to say who it is for.

Around 50 to 60 characters is the usual working range. The real constraint is pixel width rather than character count, because Google truncates on rendered width - a title of capital Ms truncates far earlier than one of lowercase Is. Character count is a reliable proxy, not a rule.

Google rewrites titles. It has done so openly since 2021, most often substituting an H1 or anchor text when it judges the title tag a poor match for the query, and this affects a substantial share of results. A well-formed title makes rewriting less likely; nothing makes it impossible. Treat the score here as a check on your own clarity, not a guarantee of what is displayed.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a title tag be?
Roughly 50 to 60 characters keeps most titles intact in desktop results. Google truncates on rendered pixel width rather than character count, so a title full of wide capitals cuts off sooner than a narrow one. Treat 60 as a working ceiling and put the important words first.
Does the keyword have to be first in the title?
It does not have to be, but earlier is safer. Titles truncate from the right, so a keyword at the end may be cut before anyone reads it. Leading with the term people searched also makes the match obvious at a glance, which is what earns the click.
Why did Google change my title in search results?
Google has rewritten titles since 2021 when it judges the tag a poor match for the query, usually substituting an H1 or descriptive anchor text. Titles that are keyword-stuffed, boilerplate across many pages, or much longer than the display limit are rewritten most often.
Should every page have a unique title?
Yes. Duplicate titles across pages make it harder for both searchers and Google to tell those pages apart, and they are one of the patterns most likely to trigger a rewrite. Templated titles are fine as long as the variable part genuinely distinguishes the page.
